ABOUT JMI
Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI)
Jamia Millia Islamia (JMI) is a prestigious institution, accredited with an A++ grade by NAAC, and holds commendable positions in both national and international rankings. It is ranked 3rd among universities and 13th overall in India according to the NIRF Rankings. Globally, it is positioned within the 501-600 bracket in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023. JMI originally established in 1920 at Aligarh in the United Provinces of India, was designated as a Central University through an act of the Indian Parliament in 1988. The name “Jamia Millia Islamia” is derived from Urdu, where “Jamia” translates to “University” and “Millia” signifies “National.”
The story of its growth from a small institution in the pre-independence India to a central university located in New Delhi—offering integrated education from nursery to research in specialized areas—is a saga of dedication, conviction and vision of a people who worked against all odds and saw it growing step by step. They “built up the Jamia Millia stone by stone and sacrifice by sacrifice,” said Sarojini Naidu, the nightingale of India.

Overview of the Programme
This workshop aims to provide participants with comprehensive knowledge and hands-on experience in the latest techniques and tools used in drug design and computational biology. Emphasis will be placed on integrating computational methods with experimental data to streamline drug discovery and development processes.

ABOUT LAB
The Drug Design and Synthesis Laboratory
The Drug Design and Synthesis Laboratory (DDSL) at the Department of Chemistry, Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi, India focuses on designing and synthesizing anti-infectious and anti-neurodegenerative agents with their structural activity relationship studies towards developing new drug/drug combinations. DDSL follow a structure-based drug design approach and actively utilize computational biology tools to design new therapeutic molecules and lead optimization. In organic synthesis and heterocyclic chemistry, DDSL utilize diverse synthetic methodologies such as Coupling, Condensation, Oxidation, Cascade, Multicomponent reactions, etc., to develop new small molecules of therapeutic interest.
DDSL has developed new antimalarial and anti-neurodegenerative scaffolds effective at the nanomolar range. Our team is pioneering hybrid scaffolds to enhance bioactivity, exploring the versatile chemistry of heterocyclic structures through ring transformation strategies.
